Daily Prayer Emphasis - January 13-19

Monday (Day 1): Spiritual Growth
Scripture: Ephesians 1:17-19 CSB

I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, would give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you may know what is the hope of his calling, what is the wealth of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the mighty working of his strength.

Focus: Pray for your own spiritual growth. Ask God to deepen your knowledge of Him, increase your faith, and help you bear fruit in your daily life and through this week. Pray we as a church would use this week to grow closer to the Lord.
Tuesday (Day 2): Repentance
Scripture: Psalms 139:23-24 CSB

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way.

Focus: Pray the Lord would examine your life and reveal unknown sin in your life so you may confess that as well. Ask the Lord to reveal things in your life that are causing distractions from growing closer to Him.
Wednesday (Day 3): Missions and Evangelism
Scripture: Matthew 9:37-38 CSB

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.

Focus: As we approach our Global Impact Conference in March let us pray for our missionaries around the world. Ask God to open doors for the Gospel and for many to come to faith in Christ. Pray that the Lord would set apart more missionaries and church planters from Central Baptist Church to take the Gospel to the ends of the Earth.

Thursday (Day 4): Praying for a Heart of Service
Scripture: Matthew 20:28 CSB

Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Focus: Pray for a heart that seeks to serve others selflessly. Ask God to help you follow the example of Christ by serving those around you in love. Pray that you would find opportunities to be the hands and feet of Jesus in your community.
Friday (Day 5): Praying for Perseverance in Trials
Scripture: Romans 5:3-5 CSB

And not only that, but we also boast in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope. This hope will not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Focus: Pray for endurance and perseverance through difficult times. Ask God to strengthen your faith and character through trials, trusting that He is working all things for your good. Pray for a mindset that boasts the Lord’s strength when we are facing a trail of life.
Saturday (Day 6): Salvations
Scripture: Acts 4:12 CSB

There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved.”

Focus: Pray that as the church shares Jesus is the only way to salvation that the Spirit would be working in the lives of the lost. Pray that we as a church would have a mindset of sharing the Gospel with those that are lost.
Sunday (Day 7): Revival
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 7:14 CSB

And my people who bear my name humble themselves, pray and seek my face, and turn from their evil ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.

Focus: Ask God to ignite a revival in your heart, our churches, the churches in Jonesboro, and across the nation. Pray for a widespread awakening to His presence, repentance, and renewal in faith.

What is a fast?

Fasting is a spiritual discipline in which a person voluntarily abstains food (or certain types of food), drink, or certain activities (social media, wireless devices, computers, TV, etc) for a specific period to focus and substitute that with prayer, seeking God’s guidance, and deepening their relationship with Him.

Focus on God
Abstain from food
Substitute eating with prayer and study
Taste and see that God is good

Why should we fast?

First and foremost, it should be done to draw us near to God. It will also enable us to celebrate the goodness and mercy of God.
  1. Express Repentance and Return to God
  2. Strengthen Prayer
  3. Discover God’s Will
  4. Express Grief
  5. Seek Deliverance or Protection
  6. Express Concern for the Work of God
  7. Obedience and Answer God’s Call

Where do we see corporate fasting take place?

Esther 4:16 - Esther asks her people to fast for her before she goes to the king.
Joel 2:13-16 - God’s people were called to fast and gather to return to the Lord.
Jonah 3:6-10 - King of Nineveh called for a fast for his people after Jonah’s warning
1 Samuel 7:5-6 - Samuel gathered Israel they fasted and confessed their sin against God.
Nehemiah 9:1 - The Israelites gathered, fasted, and confessed their sins and the sins of their ancestors.
Ezra 8:21-23 - Ezra called the people together to fast, humble themselves before God, and ask him for a safe journey.
Acts 13:1-3 - The church at Antioch fasted prior to sending out Saul and Barnabas.

How do I choose what type of fast?

Selective Fast
This type of fast involves removing specific things from your diet. One example of a selective fast is the “Daniel Fast”. The Daniel Fast removes meats, bread, sweets and replaces that with water, juice, fruits and vegetables.

Partial Fast
This is when you fast all food for a set specific time throughout the day. For example, you may decide to fast from sunrise to sunset and eat food only in the evenings.

Refocus Fast
This fast is a great option if you have health issues that prevent you from fasting food, or if you can’t fast from food due to life circumstances. For example, you might stop the use of technology (social media), cut out nonessential foods (sweets).
